Which three books would you recommend?
Murmurs of EarthCarl Sagan
This book is about an interstellar message, but it’s relevant to designers and communicators in a much broader sense. I love to think about communication on a very fundamental level, about the importance of intent and context and how much they inform the message and its interpretation. Trying to find universal axioms of communication and applying them to our more confined, human scale can teach us so much about bridging connections across cultures and even centuries.
Ways of Being James Bridle
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to shift their perspective beyond a purely anthropocentric world view. Ways of Being asks us to rethink our relationship with a more-than-human world, nature and technology alike. It shows how our understanding of intelligence is a very egocentric one. That we would do well to acknowledge how much we don’t know and that we should listen more to all the non-human forms of intelligence that surround us.
Moiré Index Carsten Nicolai
I love indexes and am fascinated by scientific phenomena. This book scratches both itches perfectly. It’s a deep dive into moiré patterns, showcasing the beauty of what happens when two structures overlap. Even with its methodical approach, it retains a sense of enchantment that makes these interferences so compelling.
