Nelson Ng
Nelson Ng is an art director and independent publisher based in Shanghai. He founded LOST, a bilingual magazine about self-discovery through travel. Rather than highlighting destinations, LOST explores personal narratives and immersive experiences. Inspired by his own solo journey from China to Japan, Nelson continues to champion independent publishing, offering a raw, unfiltered perspective on what it means to explore the world.
Which three books would you recommend?
Empty and FullFrançois Cheng
I recommend this book to anyone curious about Asian aesthetics and values. It’s primarily about the language of Chinese painting but is also much more than that. To understand Chinese painting, you have to explore the philosophy and concepts that connect the spiritual with the physical. This book helped me see the significance of inner landscapes.
Religion for AtheistsAlain de Botton
Both theists and atheists would appreciate this book, especially anyone curious about our moral and emotional needs. It explores the social and practical functions of religion, the roles they serve, and why we need them.
Happy MoneyKen Honda
This book offers an uplifting and positive perspective on money, which many people might not have. In a way, it’s a very Asian perspective—seeing money as energy and understanding how to navigate its flow.
What is your favourite bookstore or library?
After travelling the world for so many years, Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City is still my favourite. They do have a great selection. Another favourite bookstore of mine is Strand Bookstore in New York, which was where I used to hang out during my university days.
