Mark Adams

Mark Adams is the managing director of Vitsœ. Mark is responsible for bringing the German brand to the world stage, as he had set up its first international office in London as the first Vitsœ office outside of Germany. He succeeded the brand’s founder, Niels Vitsoe, in 1993 and relocated the company and its manufacturing to the UK. Mark is a passionate advocate of the need for the world to live better, with less, that lasts longer.

Which three books would you recommend?

The Selfish Gene
Richard Dawkins
This was published while I was at the same school that educated Richard Dawkins. There was much excitement in the renowned biology department. We read it. We dissected it. Altruism became central to my purpose in life. I've read most of his books since. I don't always agree with him, but he provokes thought. Careful thought.

Small is Beautiful E.F. Schumacher
The sub-title – a study of economics as if people mattered – is vital, and usually overlooked. I remember my parents debating this with their friends when it was published in 1973. Schumacher was a German who made Britain his home. My appreciation for anglo-german thinking – ordnung and eccentricity – had started. He distilled the problems of the human race to "greed" and "envy". Despite his prescience, we did not heed his warning.

Think Small: The story of those Volkswagen adsFrank Rowsome Jr
Although it was published in 1970 I only bought and read an original hardback copy recently (I buy most of my books secondhand online; I love it). The story of those Volkswagen ads starts in 1959 and continued through the 1960s – the decade in which I was being shaped. Today this book still reads as fresh as a daisy. I love it. You will, too.

Whose reading list are you most curious about?

I have spent 35 years visiting the homes of wise Vitsœ customers – to organise their books. I adore the glimpses into their souls – and taking their recommendations. My library has learned from theirs. I am most grateful.
